Salty or sweet?

Which do you prefer? I have to admit to the former. I’m much more likely to dip into the salty box than the sweet one, but over the years my craving for salty foods has lessened and now I use very little. I haven’t deliberately altered my habits, it just seems to have happened. One of my friends, however, is having a lot of trouble reducing her sugar intake. She sent me the link to this article, and I’m passing it on in case it is of interest to anyone. It begins by talking about Krispy Kreme doughnuts. I didn’t know there were such a thing, but I do sometimes eat yogurt – fortunately, not the one mentioned in the article!

Ours is a small garden ours is!

But it’s surprising what you can get into a small garden if your try. Tonight we are eating the last of the potatoes

Fresh from the ground.

The soil is so dry it just drops straight off.

I’ve forgotten how to shop for them. No doubt I’ll get some practice soon ;)

You can usually find an image from the garden here, too.

A splash of colour

July 2013 001

Nasturtiums, always add a bright splash of colour to any garden. Equally at home in pots, hanging baskets or even the ground itself their only drawback is that they are also loved by blackfly an aphid which is itself loved by ants! Keeping them at bay can be a full time job, but their yellow, orange and red flowers are a reward in themselves. The leaves, and the flowers, are also a tasty addition to salads! Our daughter, then aged 3, discovered the peppery flavour while we were on a holiday in Scotland. We still pull her leg about it, even though she is now old enough to discern whether or not eating one is a good idea.

So, they are to be recommended if you want something different, but I have to admit that I wasn’t expecting to see any for sale. Well, I did, on Saturday – and here is the proof!

The picture is a little blurred as I was trying to ‘shoot from the hip’, as it were. I didn’t want to draw too much attention to the attention I was paying to the display!

Enjoy your food today – whatever you are eating ;)

Did I tell you I love figs?

I’m sure I’ve told you this story. No? Well, here we go

It was my brother’s 21st birthday. We had all gathered at a big fancy restaurant for dinner. How fancy? Well, I was wearing a long dress and long gloves! It must have been pretty fancy, but my dress would not have disguised the fact that I was pregnant. Apart from ourselves and my brother, my parents, and two uncle and aunts were there, along with a couple of cousins. We had great fun, lots of chatter, lots of wine including champagne (I’m trying to set the scene here!). (This was in the days when a glass or so of red wine was considered good for the baby, I hasten to add)

The dishes were served silently, coming and going with an effortless ease. We didn’t really notice the waiters, it was a really special evening. I have no memory of the first or main course. They must have been good, or I would have remembered them as bad. Finally the dessert menu was presented, and I chose fresh figs. Well……
It now transpired that the Maitre d’ was Greek. He suddenly went into ecstasy mode.! The whole restaurant became silent and everyone looked in our direction. ‘Madame! Madame! Madame, she want figs! Madame, she want fresh figs! She want FIGS! She is pregnant and she want FIGS! In my country, we know when a lady want figs when she is pregnant, she is expecting a boy. More champagne! She is expecting a boy.’ He went on in this vein for some time, the whole restaurant cheered, and we did indeed get a free bottle of champagne. I duly ate my figs and went home.

Three months later I gave birth to our daughter. I remembered this the other day when I read this post. Have you had your fig today? ;)
