There are a number of phrases that irritate me. The title of the post is just one.
THE day. Which day? The use of ‘the’ implies that there has only ever been one day to which to refer. I want to know which day! Maybe if I drank more coffee it would make more sense. How do you feel about it? Maybe I’m just generally irritable. (Or should that be irritating?)
Anyhow, the rant got me to coffee, which is where I wanted to be. I like coffee. I like coffee when I want it! I like coffee that I like! (Yes, it should have been irritating). We use ground coffee, and every now and then we are treated to a specific bean that is exceedingly delicious! This morning I was pondering whether to order some when my mind went back even further, and I hate to say it, but the phrase ‘back in the day’ popped into my head. Of course, I immediately went and washed my brain out with soap and water so that it didn’t happen again, but I was still left with the image that had provoked the reaction.
It was a memory from primary school. Now this was in the last century (remember, Grandson is convinced I’m 175) and I had an image of the school caretaker sweeping the floor of the school hall. He had a long handled very wide broom which he pushed before him. I would swear that in front of it was a huge mound of damp coffee grounds from the staffroom which were used as a sort of magnet to collect all the dust that accumulated. Does anyone else remember something like this? Is my memory playing tricks? Was that THE day?
