Do you like garlic?

I love soup.  I love making it, and it’s especially good if I can use fresh vegetables from the garden.  It’s quick and easy to make, and frankly I think that just about ‘anything’ goes.  Shop bought soups just aren’t the same, however, there are a few brands that can be trusted, and in an emergency we have resorted to them when time was of the essence.

Dashing between venues yesterday we resorted to a pack of this

I expected a light summery flavour but it was a real disappointment.  It tasted of garlic.  That’s all – just garlic!

Not a good idea to consume something like this when you are in relatively close quarters with customers.  So as far as I’m concerned, it’s back to the stockpot!

Did I give you this before?

If I didn’t give you these links before now it was a serious omission.

First of all go ken_robinson_says_schools_kill_creativity.html .  It’s a TED Talk from 2006

Once you have seen that take a look at the sir_ken_robinson_bring_on_the_revolution.html

There were 4 years in between.  Had anything changed?  I keep going back to them and wishing I could start a mini revolution.  Any teachers out there?  It could start with you ;)

The most depressing thing about having children

Family is very important to me. I have two lovely children and 7 delightful grandchildren/step-grandchildren. It’s wonderful to watch them grow and develop. The best thing is to see the way they develop as individuals and become real people in their own right.

The most depressing thing, though, is seeing that they have inherited all the best bits of your partner – and the worst bits of yourself.

(Not that I have any worst bits, of course)

;)

Store-cupboard Supper!

It’s always useful to have something up your sleeve for one of those nights when there is hardly anything in the cupboard.  This is one solution to the problem.  In fact, it’s tasty enough for a not so emergency meal too.

Slice an onion and cook it in a small amount of olive oil until it just begins to colour.  Add a chopped or crushed clove of garlic and cook for just a little longer.  The onions need to be cooked, but not too brown.

This is the secret ingredient, and it is something I always keep in the cupboard, just in case…

Yes, it’s a heavy sweet dessert wine, and it adds unexpected yummy flavour.  Add a small wine glassful to the onion/garlic mix and simmer to remove the alcohol.  In an emergency (ie no Marsala) you could always leave this out, but the flavour isn’t the same……

Once the alcohol has gone add a whole tin of chopped tomatoes.  Of course, if you aren’t just relying on your store-cupboard you could always use chopped fresh tomatoes….

Mix well and heat until the sauce begins to thicken, now it’s time to start cooking the pasta in another pan.

Once the pasta is boiling start to flavour the sauce with salt (if you use it, not much, just a little and I prefer sea salt) black pepper, paprika and (preferably) freshly chopped herbs.  These came from the garden.  Basil is good, or parsley, or….. well, use what you have, dried is acceptable too, but add these at the same time as the tomatoes.  Mix well together and simmer until the pasta is ready

Pasta ready?  Drain, leaving about 1tablespoon of liquid in the pan.  Add a smallish dollop of cream cheese if you have it.  This isn’t compulsory, you could use butter or olive oil instead – or even Greek Yogurt…… or nothing.  Stir well to make a creamy coating on the pasta.  Divide between two plates and ……

…. serve with the tomato sauce on top.  Add a little grated cheese if you wish, Parmesan, Cheddar, whatever you have.

Enjoy.

There’s nothing like a good fight

I don’t know about you, but I don’t like the sight of blood.  I can cope with it, and have had to on many occasions, all mothers’ have to be able to cope with emergencies, but I don’t like the sight of unnecessary blood!  You know, the sort that is spilled in an argument.

There is nothing like a family get-together to ‘bring on’ the prospect of a fight, and usually it’s over the most ridiculous of things.

For instance, how on earth could you start an argument over a scone?

Well, firstly, how do you pronounce it?  To rhyme with ‘on’ or ‘tone’?  I’ve heard it pronounced to rhyme with ‘soon’ too, (similar to the Stone of Scone!).  Next, should there be fruit, or just plain?  How about butter?  Should you use it?  Should you leave it out?  Don’t forget the jam, should it be strawberry or raspberry?  I’m sure you all have preferences, but they don’t count when there is a RIGHT way to do it.  Add another dimension to the argument by mentioning Cream Teas, especially if you have representatives of both Devon AND Cornwall (or should that be Cornwall AND Devon) in the room and fireworks will follow at any moment.

By the time you read this I may well have experienced just such a fight as above.  It might well be cake knives at dawn, but I won’t be drawing mine.  We have an interesting family mix gathering today for a lovely wedding.  There will be 100 or so guests.  I’m looking forward to seeing the 100 – it’s the ‘or so’ I’m worried about, and all families have those!

Now, where did I put those bandages?

Weekly Photo Challenge – Merge

This is my second post for today.  Don’t miss the first, but I couldn’t resist the weekly photo challenge!  There is a dodgy entry over at Just Snaps, but this one is even dodgier!  This is a picture of two people really trying to merge into the background!

It wasn’t so much a question of ‘now you see them, now you don’t’ as ‘now you see them, yes, they’re still there……!’
