Today is my Uncle’s birthday, he will be 88.
My earliest memory of him is the day that my brother was born. I was staying with my grandparents and upstairs, helping to make the beds. A telegram arrived and his voice from the hall called to announce the arrival. I can still remember my reply ‘Oh good, can I go home now?’. He always made me laugh and we developed a good relationship which is still strong, even though we don’t meet as much as we would like. Luckily he and my Aunt lived nearby, so they were very much a part of my young years and he is very special to me.
Is he enjoying his retirement? No, because he isn’t retired. He is still doing the job that he loves. In spite of the fact that he is almost totally blind he still travels the world giving lectures and doing research. He has written many books, and is still writing, although now in collaboration. He’s an entomologist and his speciality is cochineal.
Happy Birthday Uncle Doug.
